The Post-Graduate Work Permit (PGWP) Program allows students who have graduated from eligible Canadian designated learning institutions (DLIs) to obtain an open work permit.
With a Post-Graduate Work Permit, newly graduated foreign students can work in Canada for any employer to gain valuable Canadian work experience. Canadian work experience in certain occupations helps graduates qualify for permanent residence in Canada through Express Entry.
Post-graduate work permits are exempt from Labour Market Impact Assessment. With a PGWP, as with all open work permits, graduates can work full time, part time, or as a self-employed.
A PGWP may be issued based on the length of the study program for a minimum of 8 months up to a maximum of 3 years. It should be noted that PGWP is a one-time work permit, and an applicant can receive it only once in a lifetime.
To obtain a PGWP, an applicant must meet certain program criteria regarding their status in Canada, institution attended, graduated program type and length, obtained diploma or degree etc. There are also additional application requirements to be followed while submitting the application.
Starting November 1st, the post-graduate work permit applicants are required to prove their English or French language Skills with a minimum level of Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB)
